Have you experienced difficulties as a child growing up? Or later in life as an adult? Difficulties of any kind can lead to trauma, anxiety, and other lingering mental health issues.
These difficulties can be experienced differently by everyone – what causes trauma for one person may not affect another at all – but if you have experienced troubles which continue to have a negative impact on you, even years later, it is likely this is due to those traumatic events leaving a lingering mark. These sources of trauma can be single events such as a stressful incident that happened only once, or they can be repeated, prolonged or complex experiences, such as exposure to different and multiple traumatic events, or an ongoing exposure which may happen on a daily basis.
What Exactly IS Trauma?
Trauma is the emotional response we have to distressing memories. Examples of traumatic events don’t just include violent or disastrous events – they can include anything which we may find difficult to cope with at the time or after the incident. Experiences can include losing a loved one through ill health, or losing a family member or friend through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Other sources of trauma can include acute incidents like road traffic accidents, physical abuse, bullying, sexual assaults, unexpected events, natural disasters, and many others. Sometimes we don’t realise we have suffered trauma and don’t know why we are experiencing certain symptoms such as anxiety, depressed mood, avoiding certain situations, isolating self, anger and irritability. We can also experience unwanted distressing thoughts, feelings of guilt and shame, being on high alert, looking out for dangers, sleep problems, phobias and many more. On occasions we may also avoid situations where we fear bad things may happen to us.
Trauma Treatment
At Trauma Therapy For You, our therapist, Vicky, is an expert in the use of EMDR therapy to treat trauma and reprocess traumatic events and memories, providing you with an opportunity to heal and overcome the trauma. She has worked as a mental health professional for 25 years, and is an accredited EMDR therapist.
EMDR can help us to make sense of our past traumatic experiences by processing the memories and the dysfunctionally-stored negative thoughts and feelings that link to our memory. This allows us to make sense of what has happened and free ourselves from the symptoms of trauma – whether those include panic and anxiety, insomnia, depression, or however the trauma presents itself. This, in turn, allows us to heal and improve our quality of life.
If you would like to talk more about how EMDR therapy could help you with trauma, or if you’d like to book an introductory session, you can get in touch on our Contact Page, or give Vicky a call on 07552 949635, and she’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.
