Does PTSD affect you?
People can experience PTSD type symptoms when they have experienced traumatic events in their life, these symptoms may come on following the incident or many years later. Left untreated, it is likely you will continue to suffer, impacting on you and your family. This can leave you feeling like you are reliving it, over and over again and make you avoid any reminders of the events, staying away from certain situations or places that make you feel fearful or make you feel that you are in danger all over again.
Do you struggle with your emotions?
You may struggle with your emotions and feel increasingly on edge all the time, waiting for things to go wrong and never able to relax. This can impact on relationships with you not being able to talk to anyone, including loved ones about how you really feel. You feel like doing this will make you feel worse so you try to block it from your memory. You may notice changes in your mood, feeling irritable, angry and overwhelmed along with poor concentration and struggling to make everyday decisions.
Do you have trouble sleeping?
Sleep can be affected with you having trouble falling asleep or even staying asleep. You may have thoughts going round and round your head at night or even have dreams about what happened. This can leave you feeling wiped out and as if you haven’t been to sleep or make you experience panic type symptoms, waking up struggling to breathe with your heart beating faster and sometimes people can think they are going to have a heart attack or even die.
Are you reliving things?
Pictures about the incident can just pop into your mind when you are doing things like watching the television or even sat in work. The images are called flashbacks that you experience and can make you feel like you are back at that time, experiencing emotions that you did back then. Certain things can cause this to happen such as smells, noises, words, sensations and many other things can trigger this.
Does PTSD ever go away?
These are all signs of PTSD which you might not recognise in yourself. Some people believe that they haven’t experienced a trauma and think that this disorder only applies to certain groups of people and don’t see their own experiences to have been bad enough to require help.
If you feel this is you, why don’t you give me a call? EMDR therapy is NICE recommended for symptoms of PTSD and you don’t have to suffer for the rest of your life. You can contact me on 07552 949635 or send me a direct message on my Contact Page, which you can find here.
